The dwarf, which grew into a humble giant

Kirpalani's N.V., a dynamic company at the heart of Paramaribo, has become a household brand in our society over time. Started as a small, but impressive wooden shop on the corner of Jodenbree- and Maagdenstraat, the company grew under its able management to become one of the biggest businesses in our beautiful country, Suriname.
On the grand opening of the company in Paramaribo, the newspaper "The West" from Monday, August 24th, 1936, wrote the following:

New Shop

On Friday evening, Kirpalani opened a new garment store, located on the corner of the Jodenbree- and Maagdenstraat. Mr. Biswamitre translated for Mr. Kirpalani, a current partner who spoke in his native English language. After he cut the ribbon that was in national colors, customers and honored guests entered the store. It was a very proud occasion due to the organized store layout and attractive prices.

Mr. N.Parmanand, a young Indian man who was already working in other departments of the firm, Kirpalani, rose to the manager of this location. The Kirpalani's firm, whose head office is located in Bombay, India, also has their export office in Japan. Other than in Suriname, Kirpalani’s still has branches in the West Indies, such as seven located in Trinidad.

 

Development and growth

The company has since experienced a steady growth: the 1950 wooden building was replaced by a large, modern building. The original product assortment, which consisted mainly of textiles, also has dramatically expanded. In addition, Kirpalani's has invested in the garment industry. For example, many will still remember the familiar RAJAH assortments.
On September 4, 1969, Governor Dr. Johan Ferrier, did the official opening ceremony of a new store at Domineestraat, a unique building that housed the first escalators in Suriname. Other investments of the firm include projects such as: offshore oil, Sampa refrigerators factory, housing and project developments.

The Kirpalani Foundation

In order to realize one of its primary objectives, namely to support social projects and institutions in our country, the company established the Kirpalani Foundation in 1986. Moreover, the organization is a consistent contributor to numerous social causes.

Today, Kirpalani’s is ever grateful to the community for the confidence they have placed in us for many years that enabled us to grow into the company we are today! Together we have entered the 21st century with great confidence!
